Step 1:  Clear the Area Around the Foundation

We start by creating space to work. 

First, our team removes grass, plants, mulch, and debris from the area extending two to three feet away from the foundation. 

If there are plants or shrubs you’d like to keep, don’t worry. We will dig them up and set them aside for replanting later. 

Then we expose about 8 to 10 inches of the foundation below the lowest siding line. This ensures we don’t accidentally raise the soil too high. 

Plus, we like keeping several inches of visibility. 

Step 2: Measure and Mark the Slope Line

Then our professional places a wooden stake about six inches from the foundation and another one 10 feet out. Then he ties a piece of mason’s line or string between them at the same height. 

After that, we use a carpenter’s level to make sure it’s perfectly straight.

Once the line is level, we measure and mark a 6-inch drop on the outer stake. That mark shows how much lower the soil should be 10 feet away from the house. 

Step 3: Add and Compact Fill Dirt

Now it’s time to shape the grade. 

We fill the low spots around the foundation with clay-heavy soil. It’s firm, easy to shape, and makes sure water drains away from the house instead of toward it.
